Perkins Grant

Every year, San Jacinto College awards Perkins grants to students in special circumstances, helping them pay for costs associated with career and technical education programs. Do You Qualify?
- Individuals with disabilities
- Individuals from economically disadvantaged families, including low-income youth and adults
- Individuals preparing for occupation in non-traditional fields
- Single parents, including single pregnant women
- Out-of-workforce individuals
- Homeless individuals
- Youth who are in or have aged out of the foster care system
- Youth with a parent who is a member of the armed forces and is on active duty
- Individuals with other barriers to educational achievement, including individuals with limited English proficiency
To be eligible for Perkins funding, you must be currently enrolled in or admitted
to a career and technical education program at San Jacinto College. You may apply
for all eligible funding programs. Funds are awarded on a first come, first serve
basis, so be sure to apply early.
Once your application is submitted, your application review begins. A response or
award decision is usually sent to you within 1-2 business days. You will receive an
email from perkinsgrant@sjcd.edu with award information and receipt/document submission instructions. Award amounts will vary based on assistance program and funding availability. Perkins
is designed to help you with the costs associated with your education. Note: due to
limited funding, you should not expect to receive 100% cost reimbursement. Once all of your receipts and documentation have been received, your award will be
finalized and your payment distributed. This process may take 1-2 weeks depending
on the timeline of additional approvals. Depending on the assistance program, you may apply for assistance more than once.
For child care and transportation assistance, you can apply each semester that you
are enrolled in classes and meet the eligibility requirements. For Allied Health and
Nursing Program Requirements Reimbursement, and CTE General Supply Reimbursement,
you are limited to one award per grant year (September 1 - August 31). However, you

Available Grant Programs
We understand that quality childcare can be expensive and we’re here to help eligible
student-parents with their childcare needs while they focus on their studies. If eligible,
you could have a portion of your childcare expenses reimbursed via the Perkins grant.
Some requirements include:
● You must be enrolled in a career and technical education major (AAS or certificate)
or prerequisite program
● You must have a GPA of 2.00 or greater in previous coursework
● Your child must be enrolled in a licensed childcare facility at the time of application.
Funds may be used at any licensed daycare facility, including the Central Campus childcare center.
Childcare is only for days and times you are attending classes at San Jac, and your award amount is subject to funding availability. See program rules for more specific information.
You may apply every semester that you meet the eligibility requirements and require childcare assistance.
Your clinical placement and/or internship is an important part of your education. Don’t let the cost of traveling to or from your new workplace get in the way. If eligible, you could have some of your internship and/or clinical transportation and parking expenses reimbursed via the Perkins grant. Funds are provided as Grant-Funded Student Support Aid (GSSA) and are subject to funding availability. Some requirements include:
- You must be enrolled in a career and technical education (CTE) AAS or certificate program and currently enrolled in a clinical or internship course.
- You must have a GPA of 2.00 or greater in previous coursework.
- You must be assigned to an external clinical or internship location that requires regular travel during the semester.
- You must provide your clinical or internship location and schedule so your transportation assistance award can be determined.
Transportation assistance award amounts are determined based on your assigned external learning location, travel distance, and clinical or internship schedule. Award amounts may vary based on each student’s placement and schedule and are subject to Perkins Grant funding availability. Submission of an application does not guarantee an award.
Students are encouraged to apply as soon as they receive their clinical or internship assignment and schedule.
We understand that required expenses for Allied Health and Nursing programs can add up quickly. Eligible students may receive a Perkins Allied Health & Nursing Requirements Award of up to $250 to help pay for approved program requirements. Funds are provided as Grant-Funded Student Support Aid (GSSA) and are subject to funding availability.
Some eligibility requirements include:
- You must be enrolled in or admitted to a nursing or allied health AAS or certificate program.
- You must have a GPA of 2.00 or greater in previous coursework.
- Funding is limited to one award per grant year.
Eligible expenses include:
- Immunizations
- Physical exams
- CPR certification
- Background checks/credentialing services
- Drug screenings
- Uniforms required by your program (including shoes for clinicals)
Don’t let the cost of required course supplies get in the way of your education. Eligible students pursuing a Career and Technical Education (CTE) degree or certificate may receive a Perkins CTE General Supply Award of up to $200 to help pay for approved tools, supplies, and/or subscriptions required by their course or program. Funds are provided as Grant-Funded Student Support Aid (GSSA) and are subject to funding availability.
Some requirements include:
- You must be enrolled in a career and technical education (CTE) AAS or certificate program and currently enrolled in a clinical or internship course.
- You must have a GPA of 2.00 or greater in previous coursework.
- Funding is limited to one award per grant year.
Eligible expenses include tools, supplies, and/or subscriptions required by your course or program, typically identified during program orientation or in your course syllabus. Personal items, books and associated course access, and tuition are not eligible.
Getting a license or certification in your field can be a necessary first step for starting your new career. This program can help you pay for program licensure exam and exam review session fees.
Some requirements include:
- You must be enrolled in or have graduated from the appropriate program (during the current grant year) for the exam for which you are requesting funding.
- You must be eligible for the exam or exam review.
- You must have a GPA of 2.00 or greater in previous coursework.

- Medical Lab Technology - ASCP BOC Interactive Practice Exam and MLS Online Review Course
North Campus
- Child Development - National Council Associate certificate application fee
- Health Information Technology - RHIT certification exam
- Health Information Technology - CTR certification exam
- Pharmacy Technology - National certification exam (NHA or PTCB)

- Computer Information Technology - CompTIA A+ certification

Understanding Perkins Grant Eligibility Terms
What does economically disadvantaged mean?
If you meet one or more of the following guidelines, you may be considered economically disadvantaged:
- You are eligible for federal Pell Grant or comparable state program of need-based financial assistance.
- Your annual income is at or below the federal poverty line.
- You are eligible for Aid to Families with Dependent Children or other public assistance programs (including WIC program participants).
- You participate in or are eligible for JTPA programs included under Title II.
- You are eligible for benefits under the Food Stamp Act of 1977 or the Health and Humans Services (HHS) Poverty Guidelines.
How does the Perkins grant define homelessness?
Subtitle VII-B of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act defines homeless as follows:
- Individuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence (within the meaning of section 103(a)(1)); and
- Includes:
- those who are sharing the housing of other persons due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason; are living in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or camping grounds due to the lack of alternative adequate accommodations; are living in emergency or transitional shelters; or are abandoned in hospitals.
- those who have a primary nighttime residence that is a public or private place not designed for or ordinarily used as a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings.
- those who are living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, bus or train stations, or similar settings, and migratory children.
What is considered occupation in nontraditional fields?
According to the United States Department of Labor, “occupation in nontraditional fields” refers to fields where less than 20% of people employed in a job are a specific gender. For female non-traditional careers, less than 20% of employees are women. For male non-traditional careers, less than 20% of employees are men.

Who is considered an out-of-workforce individual?
If you have been working primarily without pay to care for a home and/or family and, for that reason, have diminishing marketable skills, you may be considered an out-of-workforce individual. The Perkins grant works to help these individuals pursue a college education and enter the workforce.
